週初め、月曜日。午前中の授業を終えて、午後は大津で、県内私学の入試広報担当者の会議があった。

学校に戻ってきて、書類の整理や明日の準備をして･･･っと、もうすぐ23時。帰る前に、昨日のブログの流れで、英語ついでにもう一つ紹介しておくことにしよう。

実は、英会話のレッスンにおすすめの教本がある。京都市山科区の City Press （今もあるのかどうか、確かめてはいない･･･）が発行している、『Stimu･Con / Heart to Heart』がそれだ。

どこかの大学の授業のテキストになっているということで、今から十数年前、大津の紀伊国屋で買ったと記憶している。

“Heart to Heart” is the first book of it’s kind which uses a completely illustrated format to tell the story as well as to develop oral skills in English.

すなわち、ストーリーから英会話エクササイズまで、すべてにまんが形式を使った最初の本、というわけ。

最初のストーリー・パートでは･･･

About Clint Johnson, an American who comes to Japan to teach English at a university for a year, his search for an apartment, his trip on a steamboat on Lake Biwa, his various experiences.

クリント・ジョンソンっていうアメリカ人が日本の大学で1年間英語を教えにやってくる。アパートを探したり、琵琶湖で蒸気船に乗ったり、とにかくいろんな体験をする。

それを読んで、まずは内容を理解する。もちろん、それぞれのキャラクターになりきって、ロールプレイをすることも可能。

In addition, there are the exercises which are designed for pair work. This is good because you can choose your partner to practice with, and in class it gives all the students an equal chance to speak as much as possible.

その次に、エクササイズがある。ペアワークなので、自分でパートナーを選んで練習できるし、授業なら学生みんなに話せるだけ話すチャンスが平等に行き渡る。（これが、ペアワークのいいところ）

こういうスタイルで描かれたシーンが全部で16あり、それぞれにサマリーがダイアリー形式でまとめられているなど、復習にも使える配慮もしてある。

Stimu･Con Heart to Heart and its companion Stimu･Con Heart to Heart Workbook are based on a new approach to language teaching which makes it possible for teachers to develop their students fluency in speech at the same pace as their accuracy in usage.

We sincerely hope teachers will enjoy using these ciassroom-tested materials which have been designed for Japanese students with a good knowledge of the linguistic system but who unfortunately have not been able to use the language communicatively.

教師用の簡単なマニュアルの冒頭には、こんなことが書かれている。

こんなテキストで英語の勉強ができたら、どんなに楽しいだろう･･･。自然と英会話に親しみ、それが身につくと思うんだけど、なっ！
